En 1896, des prospecteurs ont trouvé de l’or dans un ruisseau près de Dawson et déclenché du même coup une véritable ruée vers le Klondike. Habités de rêves dorés et encouragés par les histoires sur les nouveaux riches, des milliers de mineurs ont surmonté le défi que représentait la traversée du col Chilkoot et bravé les eaux tumultueuses du fleuve Yukon afin de se rendre à Dawson. Transformée en véritable ville frontalière exubérante, Dawson fut envahie de prospecteurs désespérés, d’entrepreneurs astucieux, de membres de la police à cheval et de filles de saloon. De nos jours, Dawson est une ville dynamique aux nombreux sites patrimoniaux et attraits touristiques. En visitant la ville, on ne peut s’empêcher de penser à ces chercheurs d’or dont l’acharnement n’avait d’égal que le désespoir mêlé de rêves dorés souvent déçus.
